Ativista antiapartheid, esposa do líder do African National Congress – ANC (Congresso Nacional Africano) Walter Sisulu, ganhou proeminência por conta própria e recebeu a denominação MaSisulu, “mãe da nação”. Nasceu em Transkei, no Cabo Oriental, sendo a segunda de cinco crianças.
