Ambrose Dudley’s determination that he would retain the town of ‘Newhaven’ against the aggression of the forces of the Duke of Guise, the instigator of the Catholic tyranny, and uncle of Mary, Queen of Scots, was hampered from the outset by misadventures ranging from the simple lack of troops and finance to a plague that afflicted his armies.
The title was recreated or restored in 1561 in favour of Ambrose Dudley, younger son of the Duke of Northumberland. However, Ambrose was childless and the earldom became extinct on his death in 1590.
(The Baroness reportedly suffered a phantom pregnancy in the mid-1550s) Lady Dudley died in 1563, again leaving Ambrose a childless widow. He took as his third, and final, wife Anne Russell. The ceremony took place on 11th November 1565 in the chapel royal at Whitehall Palace.
