  4. Frederick North's father, the second Earl of Guilford, George Ill's First Lord of the Treasury, had died in 1792 and had been succeeded in turn by Frederick's two elder brothers. Both died without male heirs, and in March 1817 the news reached him in Florence that he had become the fifth Earl.
