General Sir Neil Methuen Ritchie, GBE, KCB, DSO, MC, KStJ (29 July 1897 – 11 December 1983) was a British Army officer who served in the First and Second World Wars.

This battle ended with the loss of Tobruk and Ritchie, along with Claude Auchinleck, bore the brunt of Winston Churchill’s anger – the British Prime Minister called the surrender of Tobruk a “disgrace”.
Lieutenant-General Neil Ritchie was commander of the Eighth Army in North Africa for the Battle of Gazala. The battle ended in a crushing defeat and the Allies lost Torbuck. Winston Churchill was incandescent and Ritchie was sacked.
Neil Ritchie was born in 1897. Educated at Lancing College and Sandhurst Military Academy he was commissioned into the Black Watch in 1914. In the First World War he fought in France and in Mesopotamia where he won the Military Cross in 1918.
Gazala and the loss of Tobruk represented Britain’s complete humiliation.’2 The commander of the Eighth Army during this disastrous campaign was Neil Ritchie.
