Jacobus Herculaas de la Rey[needs Afrikaans IPA] (22 October 1847 – 15 September 1914), [1] better known as Koos de la Rey, was a South African military officer who served as a Boer general during the Second Boer War. De la Rey also had a political career and was one of the leading advocates of Boer independence.

De La Rey captured a British supply train at Yzer Spruit on February 24, 1902. A short time later, he turned the tables on Methuen when he attacked his rear guard at Tweebosch on March 7. In the sharp firefight, Koos’ troopers inflicted 200 casualties and captured 850 British prisoners, one of whom was Methuen.

He was born in 1847 in the Orange Free State and had a political career, serving as a member of the Transvaal Parliament and Senator.
De la Rey was involved with the peace negotiations at Vereeniging and was instrumental in convincing the diehard republicans to accept that the war was lost. Jacobus Hercules de la Rey was a talented and popular Boer leader in the South African War (1899–1902). De la Rey gained military experience in the Transvaal’s attacks on African groups and represented Lichtenburg in the Volksraad (parliament), opposing Pres. Paul Kruger.
