As director of the CIA, Panetta oversaw the operation that found and killed Osama bin Laden, the Al Qaeda leader who masterminded the attacks of September 11, 2001. President Obama then appointed Panetta as secretary of Defense in 2011; the U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed his nomination.
