Fred Brathwaite (born August 31, 1959), more popularly known as Fab 5 Freddy, is an American visual artist, filmmaker, and hip hop pioneer. He is considered one of the architects of the street art movement.
Along with friends and contemporaries, Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Lee Quinones and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab was a key player in New York’s 1980’s downtown cultural scene instrumental in elevating graffiti into a disruptive movement that would eventually give birth to street art.

Born in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, Fred Brathwaite aka FAB 5 FREDDY began his artistic career creating graffiti pieces throughout New York City. In homage to Andy Warhol, Fab Freddy covered a subway car with Campbell’s soup cans, creating a classic of subway graffiti art.
