Stablemates is a 1938 American sports drama film directed by Sam Wood and starring Wallace Beery and Mickey Rooney.
The film is a tearjerker punctuated by comedy -- essentially a reworking of The Champ (1931) set at a racetrack, with Wallace Beery as a down-and-out vet who strikes up a warm yet rocky friendship with an orphaned stable boy played by Mickey Rooney.

Stablemates plot "A Couple Of Mugs You'll Love!" Tom Terry is a former vet who is almost always intoxicated these days. Despite this, he is adored by young Mickey who dreams of becoming a jockey. As a token of appreciation, Tom gives him advice on the art of horseback riding.
