Plot. The crew of an American submarine are on a reconnaissance mission, photographing Japanese installations through a periscope camera. When attacked by the Japanese (with similarities to USS Perch) the submarine is scuttled and the crew is captured.

The Battle of the Coral Sea, which took place on May 7, 1942, was fought to prevent the Japanese from capturing Port Moresby, New Guinea, a strategic victory that would have allowed the Japanese full control over the Coral Sea, thus cutting off Australia from the Allies.
