In a slum area called Easy Street, the police are failing to maintain law and order. The Little Tramp, a down-and-out derelict, is sleeping rough outside the Hope Mission near the streets of a lawless slum. The sounds of a service in progress draws him wearily inside.
For Easy Street, his ninth film for Mutual and the most famous of the twelve, Chaplin ordered the first of the T-shaped street sets to be built that he would consistently utilize to provide a perfect backdrop to his comedy.
Hilarious, spellbinding and class warfare conscious, Chaplin's Easy Street is a 104 year old banger that shows Chaplin evolving from his strictly romantic pratfall shorts before this to something with a little emotional tension amidst the laughs and the swoons.
