Young Tom Edison is a 1940 biographical film about the early life of inventor Thomas Edison directed by Norman Taurog and starring Mickey Rooney. The film was the first of a complementary pair of Edison biopics that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released in 1940.

In the early 1860's, in the town of Port Huron, Michigan, young Tom Edison is misunderstood by everyone except his mother Nancy and sister Tannie. When Tom accidentally sets off a smoke bomb in the school house cloakroom, his narrow-minded teacher, Miss Lavina Howard, calls him addled and expels him from school.
The teenage years of brilliant inventor Thomas Alva Edison as the young man troubles his family and his school teachers with his great quest for knowledge.
