Carl Fisher was a complicated man with an imagination bigger than all of Indiana. In 1913, he led the effort to build the Lincoln Highway, the world’s first transcontinental highway connecting the East and West Coasts.
CARL G. FISHER was the driving force behind the creation of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as a testing facility for the automobile industry. He served as the track’s president from 1909 until turning the duties over to his principal partner, James Allison, in 1923.
Carl G. Fisher. Born in Greensburg, Fisher helped found the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, developed Miami Beach, and promoted construction of the Lincoln and Dixie Highways. Three-time Indy 500 winner Wilber Shaw also spent part of his childhood in Greensburg. Circa 1941.
