Mit insgesamt 13 Medaillen war Willi Melliger der erfolgreichste Schweizer Springreiter bei Europameisterschaften. [5] Erstmals am Weltcupfinal nahm Melliger 1982 mit Trumpf-Buur teil. 1983 errang er mit Van Gogh zwei grosse Erfolge: Er wurde zum zweiten Mal Schweizer Meister (dies sollte ihm insgesamt sechs Mal gelingen).

Together with his gelding Calvaro, they were the dream team, winning the silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and the team silver at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney (AUS).

A four-time Olympian in the equestrian events, Willi Melliger was twice a show jumping silver medalist, capped by his individual silver aboard Calvaro V at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He and Calvaro competed together from 1995 to 2001, also winning a team European Championship in 1995.
