    Renée Houston was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, the daughter of a liquor salesman, who, with his wife, later formed a variety song-and-dance act, performing as James Houston and Company. She was brought up in Shettleston in Glasgow.

    She began performing in music hall in 1916 with her sister Billie (born Sarah McMahon Gribbin; 1906–1972) and they formed their own music hall double-act, The Houston Sisters, their comedy based on sibling rivalry and Scottish working-class life.
