His mother was Anne Woodville, sister of the queen of Edward IV [Elizabeth Woodville]. He succeeded his grandfather in 1483. He was a member of the privy council of Henry VII.

He succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Essex on 4 April 1483. He died on 13 March 1539/40, and on his death the Earldom of Essex and Viscountancy of Bourchier became extinct.
