American poet, painter and sculptor, Elise Asher studied art in Chicago and Boston, before moving to New York in 1947. Here Asher began to paint mystical landscapes in a vivid palette. She had her first solo show in New York in 1953, and two years later published her first poetry collection.
Asher (1912–2004) was one of the women of the New York School whose paintings of the 1950s and 1960s blend calligraphic handwriting with color and brushwork. The personal style of these linear abstractions was Asher’s unique contribution to the movement.
