Robert Reed Church Jr. (October 26, 1885 – April 17, 1952) was a prominent businessman and Republican Party organizer in Memphis, Tennessee. His father was the successful businessman Robert Reed Church, and Church Jr. succeeded his father as president of the Solvent Savings Bank and Trust Company after his father's death.
Robert Church, Sr. founded virtually a Memphis dynasty - one of the most prestigious African American families in the United States. His first marriage was to a well educated ex-slave Mary Louisa Ayers in 1862.
19 de nov. de 2007 · Robert Church, Jr. was a perennial delegate to several Republican National Conventions from 1912 to 1940. His Lincoln League provided the swing votes that propelled Republicans to victory in several Memphis and Shelby County.
Church junior served as an adviser to Republican presidents in the 1920s but declined any political appointments. The senior Church generally chose to stay outside the politics of his era, which enabled him to maintain influence among both white and black Memphians.
