Mary Anne Clarke (born Mary Anne Thompson; 3 April 1776 – 21 June 1852) was the mistress of Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. Their relationship began in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of the army. Later in 1809, she wrote her memoirs which were published.
Daphne du Maurier's novel Mary Anne (1954) is a fictionalised account of the real-life story of her great-great-grandmother, Mary Anne Clarke, née Thompson (1776-1852). It was published by Gollancz in the UK and by Doubleday in the US.
Not surprisingly, Mary Anne Clarke’s body, fashion choices, and theatricality feature prominently in representations that center on her feminine duplicity and dangerous sexuality. Clarke’s attempts to represent herself as an innocent heroine are parodied through references to her role as a mistress and her desire for fame and luxury.

In the first quarter of 1809, public attention was distracted from the recent British military humiliation in Spain by the scandal of the alleged involvement of the duke of York, the king’s second son and commander-in-chief of the army, in the sale of commissions by his former mistress, Mrs. Mary Anne Clarke.
