Academy of Our Lady and Spalding Institute were Catholic high schools across the street from each other in downtown Peoria, Illinois. The Academy (AOL), a girls' school, traced its lineage back to 1863.
The Academy of Our Lady/Spalding Institute – Class of 1983 website is a platform designed for alumni of the prestigious educational institution to reconnect, share, and reminisce about their time in school.
Spalding Institute. The Catholic Church enjoyed spectacular growth during the Nineteenth Century. The Catholic population grew from around 500,000 to nearly 9,000,000 between 1830 and 1890. John Lancaster Spalding envisioned a fuller role for Catholics in American life and he promoted a philosophy of education which would meet that goal.
The two schools were located across the street from each other and existed as separate schools with separate classes until 1973 when the administrations were merged into Academy of Our Lady/Spalding Institute.
The school that they began eventually became our cherished Academy of Our Lady. Spalding Institute. A Catholic high school for young men was founded in 1899, named Spalding Institute after Reverend Ben J. Spalding, the brother of Bishop John L. Spalding, founder of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.
