These four downs are labeled in chronological order -- first down, second down, third down and fourth down. The "distance" number that follows when a down gets called out is the number of yards to go for the offense to go in the initial 10 yards.

Offenses aim to move 10 yards down the field in four tries (or fewer) to gain another first down, which means they get four more chances to advance the ball again. If the offense reaches the first down line, they are rewarded with a fresh set of four downs.

16 de ago. de 2022 · Per football rules, a team has four downs (1st,2nd,3rd, and 4th down) to either achieve a first down or score before relinquishing possession. All downs start with ten yards to the next first down or first to goal if it is less than 10 yards to the endzone.
When downs are described the number of the down is followed by how many yards are left to go. So the typical first down will be described as "first and ten". This means it is first down and there are 10 yards to go to get the next first down.
