Sir Henry Ughtred or Oughtred (c. 1533 – June 1599) was a merchant and shipbuilder during the reign of Elizabeth I. One of his ships, the Leicester sailed with Sir Francis Drake against the Spanish Armada. He was elected MP for the seat of Marlborough in 1584 and of Great Bedwyn in 1589.
Sir Anthony Ughtred or Oughtred, Knight banneret (c. 1478 – 6 October 1534) was an English soldier and military administrator during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. Ughtred fought in Ireland, the Anglo Scottish border and both on land and at sea in France.
Sir Henry Ughtred was a justice of the peace in Hampshire from 1575 until about 1593, sheriff in Hampshire from 1581 to 1582, a member of the council of Munster in 1587 and captain of Netley Castle, Hampshire before 1596.
Sir Henry Ughtred was one of the many men who were to profit from the Plantations of Ireland, the confiscation of land from rebellious Irish landowners by the English crown, and the colonisation of this land with settlers from England and Wales.
Henry Ughtred married the widowed Elizabeth after 1557 and Henry Cromwell married Mary sometime before 1560. Details of her later life remain obscure, however she and her husband appear in the records from time to time in matters relating to her son, Henry Cromwell's minority and suits for the continuation of royal grants at the commencement of each new reign.
Marriages and issue. Sir Anthony Ughtred was married firstly to Eleanor (Alianora) sometime before 1514. In January 1531, he married Elizabeth Seymour, daughter to Sir John Seymour and Margery Wentworth of Wiltshire, sister to Jane, Henry VIII's third wife.
