King's College London (informally King's or KCL) is a public research university located in London, England. King's was established by royal charter in 1829 under the patronage of King George IV and the Duke of Wellington. In 1836, King's became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London.
King's College London is one of the top 40 universities in the world (2024 QS World University Rankings) and among the oldest in England. King's has more than 23,000 international students from 185 countries worldwide, and some 8,500 staff. King's has an outstanding reputation for world-class teaching and cutting-edge research.
KCL is a major research university. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, it was ranked 6th nationally in the ‘power’ ranking, which takes into account the quality and quantity of research activity, and ranks among the top institutions in the THE World University Rankings.
