Daniel Hack Tuke (19 April 1827 – 5 March 1895) was an English physician and expert on mental illness. [1] [2] Family. Tuke came from a long line of Quakers from York who were interested in mental illness and concerned with those afflicted.

Daniel Hack Tuke was the great-grandson of the founder of the York Retreat, which had pioneered the moral management (as opposed to the restraint) of the mentally ill from its foundation in 1796, and a fourth-generation psychiatrist.
Daniel Hack Tuke was one of the best known Victorian psychiatrists. He was a strong supporter of the Association and wrote an account of its first 40 years. He was an editor of the Journal, President and the author of two of the major textbooks of psychiatry in the second half of the nineteenth century.
