Ralph Milbanke, second earl of Lovelace (1839-1906) found peace by writing Astarte, the labor of his old age, published in 1905 in an edition of 200 copies. Lovelace was the grandson of Lord Byron and was raised by Lady Byron after the early death of his mother, Ada Byron King, in 1852.
Biography. 2nd Earl of Lovelace. During 1847-8 Ralph was a pupil at Wilhelm von Fellen berg's Pestalozsian school at Hofwyl, near Berne. On 14 November 1860, Ralph received a Royal Licence from Queen Victoria to take the name of Milbanke instead of King, and to quarter the arms of Milbanke with that of King.
A typescript catalogue of the books owned by Ralph Milbanke, 2nd Earl of Lovelace, author of Astarte, created in 1910. The catalogue was bought by the Bodleian Libraries in 1961 and is available online.
