He recommended up to 41% oxygen administration continuously for hypoxic patients as ‘intermittent oxygen therapy was like bringing a drowning man to the surface of the water – occasionally’.

A member of the Cloan branch of the centuries-old Haldane family of Gleneagles, he was the younger brother of Richard Burdon, Viscount Haldane of Cloan, and father of J. B. S.
