John Scott Haldane CH FRS (/ ˈ h ɔː l d eɪ n /; 2 May 1860 – 14/15 March 1936) was a British physician physiologist and philosopher famous for intrepid self-experimentation which led to many important discoveries about the human body and the nature of gases.

Haldane developed several procedures for studying the physiology of breathing and the physiology of the blood and for the analysis of gases consumed or produced by the body.

Haldane was the first to classify the three types of hypoxaemia-lack of oxygen, lack of haemoglobin, or lack of circulation. He recommended up to 41% oxygen administration continuously for hypoxic patients as ‘intermittent oxygen therapy was like bringing a drowning man to the surface of the water – occasionally’.

A member of the Cloan branch of the centuries-old Haldane family of Gleneagles, he was the younger brother of Richard Burdon, Viscount Haldane of Cloan, and father of J. B. S. Haldane, the geneticist and philosopher.
