Lamb was a younger son of Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne, and his wife Elizabeth Milbanke, and the younger brother of Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.

  6. Frederick James Lamb, third Viscount Melbourne and Baron Beauvale, the third son of Peniston, first viscount Melbourne, was born on 17 April 1782, and was educated at Eton. In 1800, together with his brother William, he became a resident pupil of Professor Millar of Glasgow University.
