Freud defines narcissism as adoration of oneself and distinguishes between primary and secondary narcissism. He also explores the sources, effects and causes of narcissism, as well as its relation to homosexuality, ego ideal and self-esteem.
We learn from Ernest Jones (1955, 304) that at a meeting of the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society on November 10, 1909, Freud had declared that narcissism was a necessary intermediate stage between auto-erotism and object-love.

Ser narcisista significa estar no outro extremo do ideal cristão de amor ao próximo, do desprendimento e da humildade, em favor do amor a si mesmo. Daí porque o narcisismo gera tanta repulsa.
