Founded in 1921, the Chouinard Art Institute was a leading professional art school in Los Angeles until it was absorbed into CalArts. It was established by its namesake, artist and educator Nelbert Murphy Chouinard (1879–1969), for the training of both fine art practitioners and commercial artists.
The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is a private art school in Santa Clarita, California. It was incorporated in 1961 as the first degree-granting institution of higher learning in the US created specifically for students of both the visual and performing arts.
Through years of administrative problems including embezzlement, the Chouinard Art Institute was several weeks away from closing it’s doors in 1955 when Disney stepped in. Nelbert Chouinard signed the school over to him, he endowed the new non-profit with ten million dollars, and thus the California Institute of the Arts was born.
Walt and his brother Roy started making this vision a reality in 1961 when they formed California Institute of the Arts through the merger of Chouinard Art Institute, founded by Nelbert Chouinard, and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, guided by its trustee, Lulu May Von Hagen.
