Wynton Marsalis is an American trumpeter, composer, and educator, and the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is the second of six sons of pianist Ellis Marsalis Jr. and Dolores Ferdinand Marsalis, and has three brothers who are also jazz musicians.
Ellis Louis Marsalis Jr.[1] (November 14, 1934 – April 1, 2020) was an American jazz pianist and educator. Active since the late 1940s, Marsalis came to greater attention in the 1980s and 1990s as the patriarch of the musical Marsalis family, when sons Branford and Wynton became popular jazz musicians.
Marsalis was born in New Orleans, the son of Dolores (née Ferdinand) and Ellis Louis Marsalis, Jr., a pianist and music professor. [2] He is also the grandson of Ellis Marsalis, Sr., and the brother of Wynton Marsalis (trumpeter), Branford Marsalis (saxophonist), and Jason Marsalis (drummer).
