While behavior modification draws on several theories and types of learning, it relies significantly on the principles of operant conditioning (Kazdin 2012). This approach to learning is most concerned with behavioral contingencies – the environmental events factors that are maintaining a behavior.

The goal of this sixth edition (as with the earlier editions) is to describe basic principles of behavior so that the student learns how environmental events influence human behavior and to describe behavior modification procedures so that the student learns the strategies by which human behavior may be changed.
Behaviors can increase by two contingent operations: (1) by producing a stimulus (positive reinforcement}, and (2) by removing a stimulus (negative reinforcement).
