Founded in 1845, The Heatherley School of Fine Art is one of the oldest independent art schools in Britain, and is among the few art colleges in Britain that focus on portraiture, figurative painting, printmaking and sculpture. Heatherleys is controlled by The Thomas Heatherley Educational Trust. Registered Charity No. 312872
Thomas Heatherley (1824-1914) took over as the school's principal from James Mathews Leigh (1808-1860) - when it was named Leigh's Academy. or simply Leigh's and uncoventionally at the time admitted women. A new school was opened on George Street (off Baker Street), London, in November 1927 after previously being located at 79 Newman Street, W1.
