While Harrell recorded several albums as a leader during his tenure with the Phil Woods Quintet, it was after his departure that he started producing albums as a leader, in succession for Contemporary Records (now owned by Concord ), Chesky, and RCA/BMG.

5 de abr. de 2021 · As we reported earlier, Tom Harrell’s contract with Contemporary Records straddled his departure from the Woods Quintet. After Contemporary/GPR Productions’ Sun Dance with George Robert, Harrell made three important albums with Contemporary as leader, all produced by Bill Goodwin.
Track one, Ebony a Sanchez composition, finds both the leader and guest trumpeter Tom Harrell in excellent form.
This is a departure from Harrell's previous four albums, in which 35 of the total 36 tracks featured the full quintet. Four tracks were recorded with no prior rehearsal – exhibiting the confidence and tightness of the group.
