The University of Strathclyde (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Shrath Chluaidh) is a public research university located in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded in 1796 as the Andersonian Institute , it is Glasgow's second-oldest university, having received its royal charter in 1964 as the first technological university in the United Kingdom.

The "Andersonian" was originally a technical school, founded in 1796 with money bequeathed by John Anderson for the creation of "an institution to be denominated Anderson's University." Anderson had been Professor of Oriental Languages and of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow, who sought to create a "university" for the teaching of practical scientific and industrial subjects.
