Leader Peter Albin, a country-blues guitarist who had played with future Grateful Dead founders Jerry Garcia and Ron McKernan, met Sam Andrew, a professional rock guitarist with a jazz and classical background.
In the winter of 1965-66 in a café downstairs from his loft while taking a break from painting, Dave met Peter Albin. Dave told Peter that he played the drums and had heard of the group that Peter played with, Big Brother and the Holding Co. One month later Dave became the new drummer for the group.

Big Brother & The Holding Company were pioneers of the San Francisco sound of the 60s. The band launched the career of Janis Joplin and recorded "Cheap Thrills' one of the greatest albums of all time.
It was Peter Albin who told me that he wanted to start a band that would write and sing songs for children. This seems remarkably prescient in him as that was exactly what we did. He meant it quite literally though since he had been working with children at Camp Meeker north of the city, and had written several songs for them.
