In 2006, the institute was achieved the status of academy — it was renamed the Kama State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism. In July 2010, the academy was transferred to Kazan by the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation and renamed the Volga State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism.
In March 2021, the Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism was renamed the Volga Region State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism. The new status expanded opportunities in educational, scientific and international spheres of activity.
