Beatrice "Sathima Bea" Benjamin (17 October 1936 – 20 August 2013) was a South African vocalist and composer, based for nearly 45 years in New York City.
The cosmopolitan and international character of Sathima Bea Benjamin's music is partly a reflection of her family's roots. Born Beatrice ("Beattie") Benjamin in Johannesburg, October 17, 1936, her father, Edward Benjamin, descended from the island of St. Helena off the coast of West Africa.
