John Petty Fitzmaurice, 1st Earl of Shelburne PC (Ire) (1706 – 14 May 1761), known as John FitzMaurice until 1751 and as The Viscount FitzMaurice between 1751 and 1753, was an Anglo-Irish peer and politician.
John Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne was born in 1706. 2 He was the son of Thomas FitzMaurice, 1st Earl of Kerry and Anne Petty. 1 He married Mary FitzMaurice, daughter of Lt.-Col. Hon. William FitzMaurice and Deborah Brookes, on 16 February 1734. 2 He died on 14 May 1761. 2 He was buried at Borwood, Wiltshire, England G. 2

In 1692, the marriage of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Anne Petty, the only daughter of the scientist and philosopher, Sir William Petty (1623-1687) transformed the family fortunes. In 1751 their son, John Fitzmaurice (1706-1761) legally changed his name to Petty. He was created 1 st Earl of Shelburne in 1753.
Neither Charles nor Henry had male issue and the Shelburne title passed by a special remainder to Anne's son John Petty, 1st Earl of Shelburne, who took his mother's surname, and whose descendants hold the title Marquis of Lansdowne.
