Biography. Charles Howard, 2nd Baron of Effingham, Lord High Admiral, commander of the flagship 'Ark Royal' against the Spanish Armada. Created Earl of Nottingham in 1596. Note that the title became extinct after the death of his second eldest son, the third Earl, in 1681.
