Selected Poems 1956–1968 is Leonard Cohen's fifth collection of poetry, first published in 1968 by McClelland & Stewart in Canada, and his first book to be published after his debut as a recording artist in December 1967.

The Selected Poems contains selections from his first four books of poetry, Let Us Compare Mythologies (1956), The Spice-Box of Earth (1961), Flowers for Hitler (1964), and Parasites of Heaven (1966), as well as a few previously uncollected poems from the years 1966-1968.

A good selection from the early books, with only very slight revisions, and a small section of interesting "New Poems" in a plainer style. It was for this volume that Cohen won the Governor-General's Award (Canada's highest literary distinction), which he declined.
