The original school at the site was the all-boys Blackpool Grammar School, which had relocated from the original premises on Raikes Parade to Blackpool Old Road in 1961. In 1971 they amalgamated with Collegiate Girls School whose pupils and staff moved to Blackpool Old Road to create Blackpool Collegiate Grammar School.

Blackpool Grammar School for Boys closed in July 1971. Pupils aged 11 to 16 of Blackpool Collegiate School for Girls merged with the boys of Blackpool Grammar and became Blackpool Collegiate Grammar School.

The Grammar School has an odd history. One might almost say that it happened because the Town Council couldn't make up its mind. The council secured the land in Raikes parade with the idea of establishing a technical school - and then dithered.
