By all accounts, this duchess was a woman of wide interests: art, botany, books, sea shells, bees and gardens, especially roses.

  4. Life dates. 1750-1794. Biography. Daughter of William Cavendish, 4th duke of Devonshire, and his wife, Charlotte Boyle, Baroness Clifford; November 1766, married William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd duke of Portland. Involved in Whig politics, supporting Charles James Fox in the 1780s.

  5. It was through the marriage of their son Henry, 2nd Duke (1709-1762) to Lady Margaret Cavendish Harley (1715-1785) in 1734 that the former Cavendish-owned Welbeck estates in Nottinghamshire came into the possession of the Bentinck family, Dukes of Portland.
