Beowulf ( / ˈbeɪəwʊlf /; [ 1] Old English: Bēowulf [ˈbeːowuɫf]) is an Old English epic poem in the tradition of Germanic heroic legend consisting of 3,182 alliterative lines. It is one of the most important and most often translated works of Old English literature.
The epic poem follows Beowulf, a hero who comes to aid Hrothgar, King of the Danes, in his fight against the vicious monster Grendel. Before the tale is over, Beowulf fights and defeats Grendel, Grendel’s mother, becomes king of the Geats, and vanquishes a dragon.

Beowulf went from there, treading the grassy earth, a warrior-prince gold-proud, exultant in treasure. The sea-going ship, riding at anchor, awaited its steering master. Along the way the gifts of Hrothgar were often esteemed. He was a singular king, without blame in everything, until old age would seize him in the joy of his strength.

Tolkien, foi uma obra precoce, muito peculiar a seu modo, completada em 1926; mais tarde ele retornou a ela para fazer correções apressadas, mas parece jamais ter considerado sua publicação.
