Under the Greenwood Tree: A Rural Painting of the Dutch School is a novel by the English writer Thomas Hardy, published anonymously in 1872. It was Hardy's second published novel, and the first of what was to become his series of Wessex novels.
Under the Greenwood Tree, a pastoral romantic novel by Thomas Hardy, is the story of romantic entanglement of a church musician, Dick Dewey and Fancy Day, a school teacher. Published in 1872, it was a two-volume novel. The title of the book is derived from a song from William Shakespeare’s play As You Like It.
Although Under the Greenwood Tree is often classified as part of Hardy's minor novels, it anticipates the fabric of his major novels and, thanks to its freshness and charm, is certainly his early masterpiece.
