In this book, Pinker explores the idea that language is innate to humans, a phenomenon he calls the “language instinct.” The book examines numerous cases that support the notion that language and grammar are built into our brains (an idea first proposed by Noam Chomsky).

I haven’t read it yet, but based on the title, I’m assuming it’ll answer a lot of my questions. Language ability is not the same thing as general cognitive ability, and it’s possible to have one but not the other.

Pinker has long pushed the idea, albeit subtly, that the only explanation for Black American failure to thrive is genetics.
