Mountbatten was granted the honour of a Royal Ceremonial Funeral (known as 'Operation Freeman') - held at Westminster Abbey, London, on 5th September 1979 which was televised globally. The news of the murder of this retired old sailor affected many, not just in the United Kingdom but throughout the World.
Mountbatten's funeral was the first major royal funeral to be held in the Abbey since the 18th century. During the televised service, his great-nephew Charles read the lesson from Psalm 107.
The funeral service was televised and the Prince of Wales read Psalm 107. In that address, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Donald Coggan , highlighted several passages from his life in the Royal Navy. After the public ceremony, which he had planned, he was buried in Romsey Abbey.
Lord Louis was assassinated while on holiday by the IRA on 29th August 1979. His funeral was held at the Abbey and he was buried at Romsey in Hampshire, near Broadlands his country home. See also.
