Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier (Lyon, 21 de fevereiro de 1815 – Paris, 21 de janeiro de 1891) foi um pintor e escultor clássico francês famoso por suas representações de Napoleão, seus exércitos e temas militares.
Mounted Hussar. Meissonier's Friedland, 1807 (acc. no. 87.20.11), a broad canvas celebrating a Napoleonic victory as envisioned by a firm adherent of the Second Empire, is arguably the most important academic painting of the second half of the nineteenth century in the Museum's collection.
Countering that image of Napoleon in defeat, "1807, Friedland," Meissonier's largest and most ambitious painting, evokes one of the emperor's greatest victories. These two paintings were the only realized works in a projected cycle of five episodes in the life of Napoleon.
