The painting Approaching Thunder Storm by nineteenth-century American painter Martin Johnson Heade is one of a series of landscapes exploring storm conditions on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Heade based the painting on his sketch of an approaching storm on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, US in about 1858.
