Note how the first two sentences of ‘Monday or Tuesday’ begin with a pair of adjectives: ‘Lazy and indifferent’ (to describe the heron) and then ‘White and distant’ (to describe the sky). In doing so, Woolf joins the heron and the sky together through this syntactical echo.
Monday or Tuesday is a 1921 short story collection by Virginia Woolf published by The Hogarth Press. 1000 copies were printed with four full-page woodcuts by Vanessa Bell. Leonard Woolf called it one of the worst printed books ever published because of the typographical mistakes in it.

But can we really call a short sketch (just a page long in the Oxford World’s Classics edition of Woolf’s short fiction) without any discernible plot a ‘short story’?

Monday or Tuesday is a brilliant and striking series of impressions, written in Woolf’s characteristic lyrical and startling prose. My Review : This short book, only 54pp in my Dover Thrift Edition, is the best and the worst of La Woolf.
