I get why they did it. Season 1 introduces the basic 3 time periods across it. Then season 1 ends with the revelation that there are more than 3 time periods (including a future apocalyptic one). Then season 2 spends time exploring the implications of that. Then season 2 ends by introducing alternate Martha and thereby the alternate worlds.
