The Duke did live in a house on the south side of what was then called King's Square, and his memory was long cherished in that district and elsewhere.

It is first mentioned by name in the ratebooks in 1686, when there were five houses on the west side and three on the east; it is likely that some of these houses had been built a few years earlier.
